REWIND
My friendship with Tamara and her family was birthed in Montauk over 30 years ago; two families with similar-age kids vacationing at the same tiny oceanfront motel. Naturally, as youngsters, our days were spent splashing in the surf and playing a few thousand games of mini-golf, yet one of my fondest memories as a teen, was when our two families (in addition to a dozen others that we bonded with at the motel), would bring guitars and marshmallows down to the beach for a raging bonfire, all awhile sharing an amazing night of music, singing, and laughs.
Joni Mitchell, Paul Simon, The Beatles all tremendous influences in Tamaras repertoire, never sounded so good as when theyre being played to the ears (and soul for that matter), of a precocious young man. Not to mention that youre pretty hooked once youve taken your last dollar that was reserved for an ice cream cone at Johns Drive-In, and donated it to Tamaras college fund (a fishbowl on the steps of the gazebo at Gosmans Dock).
FAST FORWARD
Nearly two decades after strumming her first six-string, Tamara has since tossed her pick into the ring as a professional musician, songwriter, and guitar instructor. Most recently, Sunsound Records released her second CD titled, Right This Minute. Backed by an equally talented ensemble of musicians, many of whom assisted in recording the CD, Tamara can frequently be caught sharing her gift with enthusiastic audiences throughout Manhattan.
It didnt take long before the title track from "Right This Minute" was debuted on WEHM 92.9 FM, a large progressive rock radio station based on the East End of Long Island; which, due to its geography, additionally reaches three states outside of New York. Listening to Tamaras song kick off a set of music that included the likes of Elvis Costello, Bonnie Raitt, Little Feat and Cold Play, while sitting on the same beach where it all started, was personally, a rather intoxicating experience for me, and difficult to contain. As for the dozen or so vacationers within earshot of my boombox, the juxtaposition of Tamaras tune among such venerable favorites appeared to be completely seamless in its execution, and further testament to her playability on commercial radio.
The station, whose web address can be found at www.wehm.com, has just elevated Tamara to its Local Artists section, promoting those musicians theyve aired, who share a connection to the East End.
PAUSE Having witnessed Tamaras incredible gift, beauty, and grace from such a young age, and now to be able to share her talent with others, is something that I personally wish to celebrate by honoring her in this Winters selection for Season of the Sol.
PLAY
I hope that you take the time to check out her website listed below, and with technology being what it is these days, sample some tracks from the new CD. If you enjoy it, I encourage you to support her creative efforts by purchasing a CD, sharing her web address with others so that they too may experience such a wonderfully talented musician/songwriter, or possibly catch her performing live at an upcoming gig.
